Kyiv Zoo (proposal)
Kyiv Zoo, founded in 1909, is one of the oldest and largest zoological parks in Ukraine. Located in the heart of Kyiv, it spans over 30 hectares and is home to more than 2,000 animals representing hundreds of species—from elephants and lions to rare and endangered wildlife.
In recent years, the zoo has undergone major renovations, focusing on animal welfare, education, and conservation. It continues to be a vital space for families, researchers, and wildlife lovers—offering natural enclosures, inclusive programs, and a deeper connection between people and nature.
Kyiv Zoo boasts an impressively diverse collection, with approximately 400 species and over 2,170 individual animals on its 34-hectare grounds. Visitors can marvel at iconic residents like African elephants, Amur tigers, Indian giraffes, gorillas (including Ukraine’s only Western gorilla, Tonya), as well as hippos, lions, zebras, and many more large mammals. The zoo also features a rich range of birds—including flamingos, pelicans, parrots, and eagles—and has a full terrarium collection with reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. From playful primates and colorful avifauna to scaly reptiles and native wolves or bison, the variety reflects the zoo’s mission to educate, conserve, and delight all who explore it.
